Q. Why is surface preparation so important?
A. Dirt, grease and other contaminants can prevent the adhesion of the COUNTERTOP Transformations™ Adhesive Base Coat to the laminate countertop. That’s why a thorough cleaning with soap and water is a critical first step for proper system performance. Deglossing the entire countertop by sanding with the Diamond-Embedded Sanding Tool is equally important since the Adhesive Base Coat may not stick well to a glossy surface, which can cause the coating to “lift” after application.
Q. Can I use COUNTERTOP Transformations™ on damaged laminate countertops?
A.Yes, but the countertop needs to be in good structural condition before refinishing. Use a two-component epoxy putty to repair small chips and dents. Wait until the epoxy putty is totally cured before refinishing. Delaminated countertops need to be reattached prior to finishing. Do not use COUNTERTOP Transformations™ if the countertop is blistering, bubbling or buckling.
Q. How does room temperature and humidity affect the Adhesive Base Coat application?
A. The ideal room temperature for applying the COUNTERTOP Transformations™ basecoat is 70°F with 50% relative humidity. The Adhesive Base Coat dries slower with increased humidity, which is helpful since the Decorative Chips must be applied while the Adhesive Base Coat is still wet. However, never apply the Adhesive Base Coat when the relative humidity is above 80% or below 20%. The clear Protective Top Coat should not be applied if the relative humidity is below 20%.
Q. How do I refinish around sinks, stoves and other appliances?
A. Simply mask the sink, stove or other appliance using smooth painters tape. Make sure your sink drain is covered to keep out the Decorative Chips.
Q. What can I do to ensure the even application of the Decorative Chips?
A. Since Decorative Chips need a wet surface to adhere evenly, make sure you apply a heavy, even coat of the Adhesive Base Coat and work quickly. Do not apply the Adhesive Base Coat to too large an area to avoid premature drying. Use a flashlight to search for glossy areas with low decorative chip density and broadcast additional Decorative Chips as needed.
Q. What if I make a mistake?
A. The COUNTERTOP Transformations™ system is so forgiving; it’s almost “goof proof.” If you make a mistake during the application of the Adhesive Base Coat or Decorative Chips, immediately touch up the Adhesive Base Coat using a small brush and reapply additional Decorative chips. If the Adhesive Base Coat is already dry, sand it smooth around the mistake and reapply Adhesive Base Coat and Decorative Chips to the area. Let it dry overnight and sand, blending into the surrounding chips.
Q. What’s the best way to apply the Protective Top Coat?
A. For a smooth lint-free top coat, use a high density foam roller like the Whizz 6” Doors and Cabinet foam roller. Never use a fan to dry the topcoat more quickly to avoid blowing dust and other airborne particles onto the wet coating.
Q. Do I have to apply more than one coat of Protective Top Coat?
A. No, but many people prefer the look of an additional coat. If you opt for a second coat, wait until the first coat is dry to the touch, sand the surface, wipe clean and recoat.
Q. Does Modern Masters COUNTERTOP Transformations™ have an odor?
A. It has a slight alcohol odor that dissipates quickly.
Q. What colors and finishes are available?
A. Modern Masters COUNTERTOP Transformations™ is available in a variety of on-trend colors and finishes including today’s most popular neutrals: Pebbled Ivory, Desert Sand, Canyon Brown, Quarry Stone and Charcoal.
Q. How do I maintain my COUNTERTOP Transformations™ countertop?
A. Let the Protective Top Coat cure for 48 hours before light use. Do not use cleaners on the surface until the countertop is fully cured – approximately seven days. After that, maintenance is similar to the maintenance of any countertop:
Q. How do I repair cracks, chips, knife marks, burns and scratches on my refinished countertop?
A. Cracks and chips can be repaired by filling them with a two component epoxy putty. Then sand smooth, touch up with the Adhesive Base Coat, apply Decorative Chips, sand again and apply a coat of Protective Top Coat. If burns and scratches are in the top coat only, sand and apply another coat of Protective Top Coat.
Q. What if I want to change my décor? Can I refinish my countertops again?
A. Yes. You can apply COUNTERTOP Transformations™ over itself when it’s time to redecorate. Follow the same directions.
